The construction of the Valencia Cathedral in a Gothic style began in 1262. On 21 May 1462, a “burning” pigeon, representing the Holy Spirit, was coming down from the dome, and sparks shot out from it lighting fire the cloth around the wooden and silver altarpiece, burning the whole decoration of the apse and the paintings in fresco of the vault. Several attempts of restoration failed.

The Valencian Bishop Rodrigo Borgia (later Pope Alexander VI) came to Valencia with the painters Francisco Pagano, from Naples, and Pablo de San Leocadio, from Reggio in Lombardia, in order to have the Cathedral as radiant as the new art movement coming up in Italy, the Renaissance. Upon arrival, they signed the contract with the Cardinal and the Chapter on 26 July 1472.

The name “Torre del Miguelete” (The Miguelete Tower) replaced the former one.

In 1381, Andreu Juliá started building this representative monument of Valencia. During many centuries it was called “Campanar Nou” (New Bell Tower) or “Campanar de la Catedral” (Cathedral Bell Tower) so as to differentiate it from “Campanar Vell” (Old Bell Tower), a Romanesque square tower situated on Barxilla Street, where one can see a few wall remains. After Juliá, the following architects were Josep Franch and Pere Balaguer.

The Silk Market is the main monument of the city and a masterpiece of civil Gothic architecture. The building has been declared by UNESCO as part of Humanity's Heritage. Construction on the Lonja began in 1483, a project of renowned master builder Pere Compte. Its resemblance to old Medieval castles is based on the rigid appearance of a fortress accentuated by its stone walls. The building contains four main parts, each one for a different use: the main Tower, the Consulado del Mar room, the Patio de los Naranjos (Orange tree courtyard), and the Contracts Room (with many spiral columns).

Easily accesible from San Vincente Mártir street, this square is one of the many must-visit sites in the city. It's a small interior square surrounded by small and narrow streets, inviting you to explore the old quarter. 'Redonda' means round and this "square" is in fact circular in shape. Every Sunday morning it turns into an improvised marketplace where you will find everything from everyday items to the most unexpected: From inexpensive clothing to pets, keepsakes, or religious stamps and statuettes.

There are also some stands where you can find typical white and blond lace open throughout the week. Later and after a bit of shopping, you can relax at any of the wide assortment of restaurants and "tapas" bars available.

The Holy Chalice | Valencia Spain

Archaeological facts, testimonies of the tradition and documents support the theory that this beautiful cup was in the Lord's hands on the eve of his Passion, took bread with his holy and venerable hands and looking up the sky, to You, God, Almighty Father, giving thanks, blessed you, broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying:

“Take this, all of you, and eat it, this is my Body which will be given up for you”. When supper was ended he took this glorious chalice into his holy and venerable hands, giving thanks, blessed you and gave it to his disciples saying: “Take this, all of you, and drink from it: this is the cup of my blood, the blood of the new and everlasting covenant. It will be shed for you and for all so that sins may be forgiven. Do this in memory of me”

Construction on these large guard towers was finished in 1391. They were once the main entrance to the city in the long-since destroyed wall. They offer a perfect view of the old riverbed of the Turia river and its surroundings. From an architectural point of view, they are both pentagon-shaped, connected by a common gallery, and decorated with gothic designs on the borders. On the top there are parapets, and, around the entire structure, you can see the remains of the old moat. These towers also serve a purpose during the famous Cridà, or announcement.

This is a popular event announcing the arrival of the most important festival in Valencia- the Fallas- encouraging everyone to participate. You can enter the towers and climb to the top for the fantastic views of the city they offer. Admission: free
